The winner of the stage was Sam Bennett (Bora-Hansgrohe), who claimed his second consecutive victory in the race. The Irishman beat Mads Pedersen (Trek-Segafredo) and Dan McLay (Arkea-Samsic) in a close finish, after his team delivered him perfectly to the final straight. Bennett also consolidated his lead in the points classification, wearing the green jersey. The stage was largely uneventful, except for a crash that involved one of the general classification contenders, Richard Carapaz (Ineos Grenadiers). The Ecuadorian Olympic road race champion fell with about 18km to go, but he was able to rejoin the peloton with the help of his teammates. He did not lose any time and remained in contention for the overall victory. The leader of the race changed again, as Edoardo Affini (Jumbo-Visma) took over the red jersey from his teammate Mike Teunissen. Affini was part of the Jumbo-Visma squad that won the opening team time trial, and he was the best placed rider of his team after stage 3. He leads by 10 seconds over Sam Oomen (Jumbo-Visma) and Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma), who are second and third respectively.
